Chemical Skin Peels

A chemical peel is a treatment that can soften skin, remove blemishes and generally improve skin pigmentation. During the treatment, a carefully prepared mild chemical solution is applied to the skin. This application causes the top layers of the skin, with the blemishes, unwanted pigmentations and superficial wrinkles, to blister or peel away revealing a revitalised skin. The depth of the peel depends on the type of chemical used. A superficial peel uses alpha hydroxy acids. A medium peel uses trichloroacetic acid. A deep peel uses phenol. Beauty therapists can perform superficial peels but a medically qualified Doctor or Nurse is required to carry out medium or deeper peels. There are risks associated with all levels of peel. Normal side effects to be expected for a day or two are redness, stinging, blistering, and temporarily increased sensitivity to sunlight. The beneficial effects of a superficial peel should last for between four to six weeks although of course some blemishes may be so superficial that they are removed forever.
